4 steps to a squeaky clean yoga mat 

A clean yoga mat is an essential thing for a yoga practitioner. A dirty mat can distract you from your exercise and can even cause diseases like athlete’s foot.

Cleaning a yoga mat is as easy as cleaning your clothes and you can do it at your home. Here are a few tips on how to clean yoga mat.

Step 1

You should always keep a yoga mat exclusively for you. Don’t use mats used by others and don’t share your mats with others.

This helps you to avoid getting any foot disease.

Step 2

Yoga mats are generally made of cotton and gets wet easily by your sweat. Other dirt particles may get things worse and make the mat smelly too.

You can use baking soda with hot water to clean these mats. Add a tea spoon of baking soda with two cups of warm water.

Dip a clean cloth in the solution and use it to clean the dirty areas of your mat.

Step 3

Many a times, yoga classes are conducted outdoors and your mat may get soiled. If the mat is lightly soiled , you can use the method mentioned in the above step to clean it.

If it is too dirty and heavily soiled, you may have to go for the extreme step.

You can clean them either using a washing machine or you can hand wash them. Add a small amount of detergent into cold water in your washing machine and run the machine in the mildest of cycles.

Don’t agitate it strongly as the mat may lose its shape.

After that dry the mat completely. If you are hand washing your yoga mat, use a mild detergent or white vinegar with warm water.

Step 4

After cleaning your yoga mat, spray it with a mat cleaning spray. Spraying regularly gives your mat a fresh new look. Use any of the mat cleaning sprays are available in the market.

Tips & Warnings

Clean you mat after each yoga session.

Add only a small amount of detergent as too much detergent can make your mat slippery.
